Prepare for Your Notary Appointment

Make sure your appointment goes smoothly by reviewing the checklist below.

What to Bring

Valid Identification (Required):
Bring one of the following forms of ID — it must be unexpired or if expired, issued within the last 5 years:

  • California Driver’s License or ID

  • U.S. Passport or Passport Card

  • Foreign Passport (with valid visa or USCIS stamp)

  • Out-of-state U.S. Driver’s License or ID

  • U.S. Military ID

  • Inmate ID (for jail signings only)

  • Government-issued employee ID (CA only, limited use)

No valid ID? You must bring two credible witnesses who personally know you and have valid ID. They must be present to swear to your identity.

Document Requirements

  • All documents must be fully completed before the appointment — do not sign in advance.

  • Do not fill out the notarial section (the part the notary signs).

  • Bring all pages of the document — even if only one is being notarized.

  • If unsure what type of notarization is required, contact the document’s issuing agency.

What a Notary Cannot Do

  • Recommend what type of notarization you need (e.g. acknowledgment vs. jurat)

  • Explain or help fill out your documents

  • Offer legal advice of any kind

If you’re unsure what your document needs, reach out to the organization or attorney that provided it before your appointment.

Hospital & Jail Appointments

When booking a hospital or jail notary, please be prepared with:

  • Full legal name of the signer

  • Exact location (hospital name, room number / jail facility, booking number)

  • Confirmation that the signer is alert, aware, and able to sign

  • Approval or assistance from facility staff if needed
